UBA, ZenithBank Boost Market Sentiment as Domestic Bourse Gains 0.56%; BDC Rate Hits N1,570/US$1

1.1 NGX – Listed Equities

Local bourse commenced the trading week on a bullish note, building on the gains recorded in the previous session as UBA’s FY 2024 performance partly lifted the market sentiment.

Specifically, Monday’s uptick was driven by investor’s interest in UBA (+2.72%), GTCO (+6.53%), FIRSTHOLDCO (+5.74%), ZENITH BANK (+5.04%), OANDO (+3.92%), MRS (+3.15%), ACCESSCORP (+1.81%), STANBIC (+0.81%), NB (+0.75%), and 16 others.

As such, the NGXASI rose 56 basis points to close at 105,551.39 points on Monday from 104,962.96 points on Friday as investors gained N368.99bn.

Market capitalisation closed at N66.19trn, while the year-to-date return increased to 2.55%.

The market breadth closed positively at 0.05x, with 25 advancers against 21 decliners and 76 unchanged equities.

ROYALEX led the gainers’ list, while NEM topped the losers’ chart.

The total volume traded advanced by 10.90% to close at 440.52m, valued at N10.47bn, and traded in 13,314 deals.

ZENITHBANK was the most traded stock by volume and value, with 55.06m units traded, worth 2.61bn.

Volume and Value Contribution

ZENITHBANK was the most traded in volume, with a 12.50% share, while FCMB and UBA followed closely with 11.26% and 10.76%, respectively.

ZENITHBANK contributed the most in value traded, with a 24.88% share, while UBA and ACCESSCORP followed closely.

On Monday, the AFEX Commodity Market saw maize and cashew increase by 3.44% and 0.52% to close at N547.15 and N1,850.00, respectively, while cocoa, paddy rice, sorghum and soybeans decreased by 13.79%, 8.96%, 8.76% and 0.12% to close at N10,625.00, N650.00, N590.00, and N928.10, respectively. 1.3.3. Global Commodity Prices

The global commodity market was largely bullish as of 2:30 PM GMT on Monday. Gold decreased 0.68% to close at US$3,020.37, while Silver increased 0.33% to close at $33.15. Brent and WTI crude futures were up 1.55%, and 0.86% to close at $72.72 and $68.87, respectively, as a higher-than-expected fuel inventory drawdown in the U.S. and renewed tensions in the Middle East countered strength in the dollar.

1.4. CURRENCY/ FX MARKET

The average BDC rate appreciated 1.27% from N1,590/USD to N1,570/USD, while the NFEM rate closed at N1,536.89/USD on Friday.
