Market Update: Local Bourse Falls 0.30% on Friday; BDC Rate Steady at N1,610/US$1 Despite Optimism

NGX – Listed Equities                                                                 

The domestic bourse closed the trading week in the red. The Friday selloffs were driven by DANGCEM (-10.00%), NNFM (-5.06%), DANGSUGAR (-2.03%), TRANSCORP (-1.94%), and 10 others.

As such, the NGXASI shed 30 basis points to close Friday at 105,752.61 points, down from 106,074.26 points on Thursday. Investors lost N202.15bn as Market capitalisation decreased to N66.47 trn, while the year-to-date return decreased to 2.75%. Investment advisory services

Amidst the downturn, the market breadth closed positively at 0.39x, with 41 gainers compared to 14 losers, suggesting positive sentiment.

LEGENDINT, INTBREW, and IKEJAHOTEL led the gainers’ chart, while DANGCEM topped the losers’ chart. Meanwhile, INTBREW, VITAFOAM, and NASCON traded above their 52-week highs at N7.70, N44.85 and N52.95, while VFDGROUP reached its 52-week low at N17.10.

The total volume traded advanced by 30.41% to close at 428.08m, valued at N20.17bn and traded in 14,284.00 deals. GTCO was the most traded stock by volume, with 60.74m units traded, while MTNN remain the most traded stock by value, worth 8.24bn.

Volume and Value Contribution

GTCO was the most traded in volume, with a 14.19% share, while FIDELITYBK and ACCESSCORP followed closely with 9.67% and 9.47%, respectively.

MTNN contributed the most in value traded, with a 40.84% share, while GTCO  and ZENITHBANK followed closely.

 NASD OTC Exchange – Unlisted Equities   

Similarly, the NASD Securities Index (NSI) closed negatively, dropping 0.24% to close at 3,269.11 points from the 3,276.98 points recorded on Thursday. The total volume traded was 3.70bn units, valued at N9.53bn, across 20 deals.

At the close of trading, the NASD OTC recorded one (1) gainer and one (1) loser.

 Global Indices

The global indices performed positively on Friday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 at the top of the chart. For more updates on the Global scene.

COMMODITIES MARKET

AFEX Commodity Prices

On Friday, the AFEX Commodity Market saw paddy rice, cocoa, and soybeans increase 6.19%, 1.26% and 0.46% to close at N557.50, N12,049.25 and N983.20, respectively, while maize, cashew, and sorghum decreased 3.56%, 3.00% and 1.29% to close at N527.80, N1,853.67 and N572.50.

Global Commodity Prices

The global commodity market was largely bearish as of 2:21 PM GMT on Friday. Gold and Silver decreased 1.61% and 1.85% to close at US$3,281.09 and $32.91, respectively.

Brent was up 1.16% to close at $66.41, while WTI crude futures were down 0.19% to close at $62.67 under pressure from market expectations of oversupply and uncertainty around tariff talks between the United States and China.

CURRENCY/ FX MARKET

The average BDC rate closed flat on Friday at N1,610/USD, while the NAFEM rate closed at N1,601.82/USD on Thursday. For updates on the Nigerian FX Market.
